Loli Fernández-Andrade
Soliloquy, Recent Works
(in the project room)
Opening Reception: September 9th, 2017, 6 - 8pm
“As time goes on, Loli Fernandez’s cultural roots deepen their hold on her imaginary. In this recent set of drawings, she evokes the ultra baroque altars in Seville’s churches and the profusely ornamented accessories in religious processions that glisten with infinite liminal folds: folds that capture both the outer and inner worlds of faithful believers. Loli Fernandez draws on those phantasmagoric worlds, suggesting the profound human density hidden in fragments of a grander narrative: a narrative that quietly surfaces like subtle whispers in a soliloquy….all this, while she draws as in a trance. In a formal sense, Fernandez’s work recalls the intricate refinement of Wols’s drawings, as well as the alluring power of Max Ernst’s frottages. Yet, her original technique is entirely her own, using matrixes made of aluminum foil, which in themselves, literally constitute a “foil” to her paper drawings, being a more audible expression of her inner musings.”
